From Phnom Penh, we took a minibus to Kampot. Kampot is a laid-back town in southern Cambodia, known for its relaxed atmosphere, riverside views, and nearby pepper farms.
Our stay here was just a quick stopover. We were both battling the flu, so we needed a bit of downtime. Not exactly the most action-packed stop, but it was a good place to rest and recover.
Hostel Vibes: Waterpark and Chill
We stayed at a hostel just outside the center, and it wasn’t your typical hostel. It had a small waterparkcomplete with a slide and jumping platforms. Not exactly what we needed as a place to rest and recover, but after a few hours of chilling, we were both surprisingly drawn to the idea of a slide. It wasn’t much, but the waterpark offered some simple fun and kept us distracted for a bit.
Taking it Easy
Kampot isn’t a city that demands a lot of attention, and that’s exactly what we needed. It’s a bit of a slow town, so we just took it easy for a couple of days. We spent time wandering around, resting, and recovering from the flu.
The Restaurant Incident
That being said, Kampot wasn’t all about relaxation. One day, we decided to eat at a local restaurant. We were hungry and just looking for something simple, so we ordered eggs. The woman serving us kept saying “baby ducks, baby ducks” when we asked about the eggs. We assumed she meant regular soft-boiled eggs.
When we cracked open the shells, though? Unhatched baby ducks. Boiled. In their shells. Not what we were expecting at all haha. We didn’t finish the eggs, but it’s definitely an experience I won’t forget. If you're ever in Kampot and find yourself ordering eggs - maybe just ask a bit more about what you're getting.
Ferry to Koh Rong Sanloem
The next day, we had to catch a ferry to Koh Rong Sanloem, but we almost missed it. We were running late, but thankfully, our tuk-tuk driver seemed to have some kind of turbo engine. He navigated the traffic and got us to the pier just in time. Definitely a good reminder to always leave a little earlier when catching a boat.
Final Thoughts
Kampot was supposed to be a short stop, and it served its purpose. It wasn’t the most exciting place on our trip, but it did have its own charm. The waterpark at the hostel, the quiet town, and even the restaurant incident all added to the experience. If you’re looking for an easy, relaxed stop on the way to the islands or just somewhere to lay low for a couple of days, Kampot is a good shout.
